Ginger
Zingiber officinale
1. Biology
Herbaceous plant 0.6-1m tall. Shallow roots (0-20cm). Leaves are alternate, lanceolate, with a characteristic scent.
2. Uses
Eliminates fishy odors, warms the stomach. Supports digestion, anti-inflammatory, joint pain relief, good for cardiovascular health.
3. Cultivation
Intercropped under canopy. Rows 30cm apart, plants 20cm apart.
I. Uses & Values
- Cuisine: Used as a spice for many common dishes such as duck, chicken, snails... effectively eliminating fishy odors, enhancing characteristic flavor, and warming the stomach for the consumer.
- Medicine & Health: Supports digestion, reduces nausea symptoms, strongly anti-inflammatory. It also helps relieve joint pain, supports blood sugar reduction, and improves cardiovascular health.
- Economic Value: A crop with high economic value, providing important raw materials for the food processing industry, refreshing teas, and premium pharmaceuticals.
II. Biological Characteristics
- Size & Roots: Herbaceous plant 0.6-1m tall. Shallow roots concentrated in the 0-20cm layer, roots max depth 18-20cm.
- Leaf Characteristics: Leaves are alternate, lanceolate. Size 15-18cm long, 2-3cm wide, no petiole.
- Suitable Climate: Prefers warm, humid climate, tolerates shade well (can be grown under canopy). Ideal temperature 20-30°C.
- Soil Correctness: Prefers loose soil, rich in humus and organic matter, pH from 5.5-7.0. Note: does not tolerate waterlogging.
III. Planting & Care Techniques
1. Density & Soil
- Seeds: Use 400-800kg seeds/ha.
- Spacing: Standard planting distance: rows 30cm apart, plants 20cm apart. Planting depth: 5-7cm.
2. Intercropping Model
Very suitable for intercropping under the canopy of timber trees like Chukrasia tabularis, Teak or fruit orchards to maximize area and shade.
3. Care Regimen
- Weeding: Weed for the first time about 25-30 days after planting.
- Watering: Water regularly twice a day (early morning and cool afternoon).
- Fertilizing: Apply balanced fertilization, combined with earthing up so tubers have space to develop.
IV. Harvest & Storage
Harvest
- Timing: About 8.5 - 9 months after planting. Harvest when ginger leaves start turning yellow and wither.
- Method: Use a small hoe or spade to dig gently, avoiding breaking or scratching the tuber skin.
Storage
- Method: Alternate layers between ginger and dry sand/soil.
- Coverage: Cover layer thickness 1.5 - 2.0cm.
- Note: Place ginger in a cool, draft-free place. Proper storage will keep ginger fresh for a long time without losing valuable medicinal properties.
Growth Process
Planting
Plant tubers 5-7cm deep.
Care
Weeding after 25-30 days. Water 2x/day.
Root Development
Earthing up to create space for tubers.
Harvest
Leaves turn yellow & wither (8.5 - 9 months).
