II. Biological Characteristics
- Stems & Roots: Herbaceous perennial, creeping. Roots grow from nodes (2-5 roots).
- Leaves: Heart-shaped, dark shiny green above, pale green below. 5 main veins radiating from the base.
- Flowers & Fruit: Flowers at leaf axils. Berries with a single seed.
- Climate: Prefers hot and humid conditions, likes scattered light (shade).
- Soil: Grows on various soils but best on light, loose, organic-rich soil with neutral pH.
III. Cultivation Techniques
1. Season
- Year-round: In warm areas.
- Best: Spring-Summer.
2. Soil & Fertilizers
Bed preparation: Width 1.1-1.2m; height 0.15-0.2m.
Fertilizer for 1,000m²:
- Organic: 1 - 1.5 tons
- Superphosphate: 50 - 60 kg
- KCl: 15 - 20 kg
- NPK: 40 - 50 kg
* Basal: All organic, phosphate, 1/3 K. Top dressing: NPK, remaining 2/3 K.
3. Propagation & Care
- Propagation: Stem cuttings. Cut 18-20cm segments from healthy plants.
- Spacing: Rows 30cm apart, plants 20cm apart. Plant cuttings at an angle, burying 2-3 nodes.
- Care:
- Watering: Keep moist. Water lightly daily or every other day.
- Weeding/Hilling: Lightly hoe and hill up when plants turn green.
- Pest Control: Few pests. Use IPM and bio-products if needed.
IV. Harvest
- Time: 35 - 40 days after planting.
- Method: Cut entire stem leaving 12-15cm stump or pick leaves. Avoid over-mature or too young leaves.
- Processing: Bundle 5-7 leaves, pin together, wash clean.
